Deciphering human influence on annual maximum flood extent at the global level

چکیده

Abstract Human actions are increasingly altering most river basins worldwide, resulting in changes hydrological processes and extreme events. Yet, global patterns of between seasonal surface water urbanization remain largely unknown. Here we perform a worldwide analysis 106 large uncover trends annual maximum flood extent artificial impervious area, as proxy urbanization, over the past three decades. We explore their relationships with hydroclimatic variability, expressed rainfall snowmelt, find that variability alone cannot explain 75% analyzed major worldwide. Considering urban area together can 57% basins. Our study emphasizes importance understanding impacts human presence on dynamics.

Reducing Inconsistencies in Point Observations of Maximum Flood Inundation Level

Flood simulation models and hazard maps are only as good as the underlying data against which they are calibrated and tested. However, extreme flood events are by definition rare, so the observational data of flood inundation extent are limited in both quality and quantity. The relative importance of these observational uncertainties has increased now that computing power and accurate lidar sca...

A note on the extent of glaciation throughout the Himalaya during the global Last Glacial Maximum

Quantitative chronologies for the impressive glacial successions that occur throughout the Himalaya have, until recently, been almost totally lacking. Within the last decade two new techniques have promised to remedy this situation. These techniques, optically stimulated luminescence and cosmogenic nuclide surface exposure dating, enable the age of many glacial features to be determined and hav...

The influence of vegetation on flood change

Floods represent one of the most prevalent natural hazards in Europe, despite being an integral part of the river dynamics. It has been suggested that changes in climate and land use might lead to an altered magnitude and frequency of flood events. However, the mechanisms underlying such changes in flood generation still need to be elucidated. In this study, we develop a conceptual framework to...
